Sodium Valproate Uses
Sodium Valproate is used to control certain types of seizures in the treatment of epilepsy and other disorders. Also used to treat acute mania in the treatment of bipolar disorder
How Taken
Adults and children; 7 to 27mg per 2.2pounds of body weight in three or four divided doses. Higher doses may be required. A low dose is used to begin with gradual increases by our doctor to achieve maximum therapeutic benefits.
Warnings and Precautions
Older patients may require lower doses to minimize side effects. Do not drive until it is determined how Sodium Valproate will affect you as drowsiness and dizziness may occur. Avoid alcohol.
Missed Dose
Take Sodium Valproate as soon as you remember. If it’s within four hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule.
Possible Side Effects
Severe pain and vomiting, muscle weakness and lethargy, yellow discoloration of the skin or eyes, fatal swelling, abnormal bleeding or bruising or seizures may be a sign or liver failure or other potentially fatal complications. These are serious side effects and should be reported to your doctor immediately.
Storage
Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light. DO not allow liquid forms to freeze.
Overdose
Restlessness, sleepiness, hallucination, trembling in the arms and hands, and loss of consciousness indicate an overdose. Seek emergency medical treatment.
More Information
Sodium Valproate should be used with special caution if you have a history of blood disease, brain, kidney or liver disease. Take with food to avoid stomach upset. Syrup can be taken with liquids, but avoid carbonated beverages as this can irritate the mouth and throat.
