Rocaltrol (Calcitriol)
Drug Uses
Rocaltrol is used to treat abnormally low levels of calcium in those with chronic kidney failure who are undergoing dialysis or who have other conditions resulting in low blood calcium such as hyperparathyroidism.
How Taken
Frequent blood tests of calcium and phosphorus are required when calcitriol is first taken to determine the proper dose.
Warnings/Precautions
Adverse reactions may be more likely and more severe in patients over the age of sixty. Do not drive or engage in dangerous activity until it is determined how the medication will affect you. Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Rocaltrol, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s within four hours of your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule.
Possible Side Effects
Fatigue, headaches, loss of appetite, metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, constipation or diarrhea, dizziness, ringing in the ears, dry mouth, muscle pains, joint pains and irritability are considered serious side effects and should be reported to your doctor immediately.
Storage
Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light
Overdose
Indictors of an overdose include symptoms due to the resulting hyperecalcemia. Early symptoms are constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, increased thirst and frequency of urination, persistent headache, loss of appetite, metallic taste, nausea and vomiting and unusual fatigue. Advanced symptoms are bone and muscle pain, irregular heartbeat, persistent itching, extreme drowsiness and mental changes.
