Diclofenac sodium (Voltaren)
Diclofenac sodium used for the treatment of pain and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (including arthritis in children) and other disorders of the muscles and joints; it is also used to treat acute gout and postoperative pain. Diclofenac is applied to the skin for the treatment of sprains and strains.
It is also applied to the eye to inhibit constriction of the pupil during eye surgery and to reduce inflammation and pain after surgery. It is available, on prescription only, as tablets, dispersible tablets, modified-release capsules and tablets, an injection, suppositories, eye drops, and as a gel for topical application.
In addition: Anticoagulants: should not be used with injections of diclofenac as the risk of bleeding is increased.
Cyclosporin: increases the plasma concentration of diclofenac, whose
dosage will therefore need to be halved.
