PostHeaderIcon Diazoxide

A drug that has two separate actions and uses. When given by intravenous injection it causes vasodilatation of the small arteries and consequently rapid lowering of blood pressure; it is therefore sometimes used as an emergency treatment of hypertension. Diazoxide also increases the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream and is taken orally to treat chronic hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose) resulting from excessive secretion of insulin (for example, by an insulin-secreting tumour in the pancreas). It is not used to treat acute hypoglycaemia resulting from insulin overdosage in people with diabetes. Diazoxide is available as an injection or tablets on prescription only.
